ONE ROOM CHALLENGE: WEEK ONE | CLOSET OFFICE

Updated: Jul 31, 2021

I am thrilled to be a guest participant in the One Room Challenge this year! I first learned of the challenge through A Glass of Bovino who has masterfully transformed several rooms in her house with her impeccable taste. I've followed past challenges with admiration, and when I learned that anybody could participate, I decided to take the plunge!

If you're unfamiliar with One Room Challenge, it's a biannual design event where 20 influencers are chosen as Featured Designers tasked with making over a space in six weeks. Guests participants can join by linking their own room transformations. This spring, the Official Media Partner is Better Homes & Gardens!

SETTING THE STAGE

Just like most people, the COVID-19 pandemic has turned my world upside down. I've been working from my dining room table for over a year now with two kids wreaking havoc all around me. Desperate for a private space, but having no extra rooms in the house, I've decided to sacrifice a storage closet in order to gain a small private office.

The closet is large and has housed anything and everything including holiday decor, party supplies, baby gear, and anything else that just needed to be tucked away.

I wanted to start with a clean slate, so the past couple weekends have been spent cleaning out the space, dismantling the shelves and removing the old baseboards. Let's just say there was A LOT of purging.

I appreciate the ingenuity of the previous owners in bringing light into the room, but I won't be sad to see the fluorescent lights operated by extension cords FINALLY get the ax.

THE VISION

Obviously, the closet has no windows, so I wanted a concept that felt light and airy. I landed on a coastal vibe since my happy place is the beach.

The goals are:

- Paneling on the long walls painted a green-gray

- A wallpaper accent wall

- A DIY desk with cabinets and a maple desktop

- Matching DIY maple floating shelves above the desk

- Wiring for new electrical outlets and a light fixture

- New baseboards

The desk makes this one of our most ambitious DIY projects to date, but I'm excited to see what we accomplish!

THIS WEEKEND'S TO-DOS:

  1. Patch and sand the walls

  2. Wire electrical

  3. Install wallpaper

  4. Install paneling (maybe)

We'll see what we're able to accomplish!
